DIY Frozen Veggie Food
Ingredients: ½ pound of fresh shrimp, semi-frozen
½ pound of frozen peas, semi-frozen
1 cup of wheat germ
1 cup of gerber baby cereal ( oatmeal)
1 clove fresh garlic
1 pound frozen spinach
2 packets of knox gelatin
Optional: VitaChem vitamins, Seachem’s Garlic Guard
Place spinach and peas into pan of water and bring to boil… let boil for approximately 3-4 minutes. Strain and cool.
While that is boiling ,take the shells off the shrimp, leaving a few here and there. Place shrimp into food processor and grind them up a bit. You don’t want to turn it into mush, so don’t overdo it. Take the shrimp out and set aside.
After it’s mostly cooled, start chopping up the spinach and peas. When it’s about done ( but not mushy), add some fresh garlic cloves and get those chopped up as well. Add your baby cereal and wheat germ as well.
In a big bowl, take the shrimp and your other concoction that’s in the processor and mix them up real well by hand, or with a big spoon until you have a green, gloppy, but still mostly tight mixture.
Add two packets of knox gelatin to ½ cup of super hot water. Stir the heck out of it. Add to the bowl and keep mixing. Dump in any vita-chem vitamins you may have, or Seachem’s garlic guard, or both. Spirulina algae powder would be great at this point too.
When you have it all mixed well, spoon into some ziplock type zipper bags. Don’t get them too full or you’ll catch heck trying to break it off when it’s frozen. After you get the bags filled ( I filled about six 6 ½ by 5 7/8 bags) , lay them on their sides and get to kneading. You can also use the back of a big spoon to smooth the mixture out in the bag. Don’t get too close to the zipper of the bag. You want them to be no more than 1/4″ thick.
When you get them spread all out, lay them gently onto a sheet pan and stick in freezer. Wait a few hours, and you got yourself a heck of a frozen fish food that will be enjoyed by many of your aquatic friends.
I should also add that this sinks like a rock. Every fish I have will run down to eat it though, but if you have some that won’t, a veggie clip might be in order.
